Matt Fraser earned the title of fittest on earth 5 years in a row after placing 2nd the two years before that. The CrossFit Games tests athletes in as many areas of fitness as possible. Olympic weightlifting, strongman, aerobic capacity, gymnastics, and a mix of all the above. The level of detail, obsession, focus, and tenacity he had when it came to being the best in the sport was like that of the greatest athletes of all time in their respective sports. He changed the sport of CrossFit competition and what is expected of someone if they want to be as dominant as he was. There are few athletes in the history of all sports that everyone acknowledges as the best we might ever see, and I place Matt Fraser in that same category.
After his retirement he started his coaching business (HWPO) training CrossFit Games athletes to compete for the title of fittest on earth. Having such outstanding accomplishments would make it understandable for Matt to feel he could build the best athletes in the sport. However, Matt recognized that he was not the authority on all things fitness, so he found others who were experts in their field to train his athletes.
Matt has built up his staff by bringing in a world renowned strongman athlete, an olympic weightlifting coach who has trained gold medal winning athletes, and has guest coaches who are experts in their field to bring top level coaching to his athletes. He recently brought in a professional ski coach as a guest trainer to teach his athletes how to maximize their output on ONE SPECIFIC MACHINE, the ski erg. Much like he did competing in the sport of CrossFit, Matt has changed the game in how to coach athletes competing in the sport of CrossFit. No one would think it strange if he chose to be the only coach, but Matt knows the value of not having to be the expert on everything.
Maybe you want to lose weight, run a marathon, learn how to take great pictures, etc. You might be able to figure it out on your own, but seeking help from an expert will speed up your progress and minimize frustration. I know this from personal experience. There is a vast array of free education out there through YouTube, Instagram, etc. that teach you how to to do almost anything. The issue is how long it takes you to get there. The best leaders, athletes, and business people in the world know the value of relying on other experts. Perhaps we could learn from their example.
